Flash flood watch is now in effect
Weather forecasters are predicting that the Upstate will begin to feel the effects of Tropical Storm Lee this evening. After slamming the Gulf Coast earlier this weekend, Lee is charting a path to our area. Heavy rains are expected to begin in the evening hours and continue through Monday and into Tuesday. Rainfall totals could exceed two inches. As a result, a flash food watch has been issued by the National Weather Service through Wednesday morning. High winds will accompany the rain and the possibility of a tornado in flatter areas cannot be ruled out.
Remnants of a summer storm
Things got bad pretty fast at about 5:30 tonight when the skies opened up. Rush hour traffic on Butler Road and Main Street came to a virtual halt. There did not appear to be any accidents as drivers opted to move along slowly. One casualty was the outdoor dining table which is pictured. It probably wasn't meant to be opened in the middle of East Butler Road, but that's what happens when a flash thunderstorm strikes. Hopefully, the owners of the box are safe and the merchant will understand and provide them with a replacement.
Heat wave is now here
The heat wave that blanketed much of the country arrived in Mauldin. And now that it's here, it shows so no signs of leaving. Stay cool.
Carbon copy
Today's high temperatures will be in the low 90s and lows will dip into the low 70s. Skies will be mostly clear with the probability of an isolated thunderstorm increasing in the afternoon hours. Chance of rain is about 30 percent. Even though skies will be somewhat cloudy, anyone spending extended periods of time outdoors should apply protection to their skin because the UV Index will be 10. Otherwise, enjoy Saturday!
A bit of guessing game
As most professional meteorologists would admit, there is a bit of an art to their science. On Wednesday, the chance of rain in the afternoon was pegged at 50 percent and rained for most of the evening hours, heavily at times. Yesterday, the chance of rain in the afternoon was again pegged at 50 percent and scarcely a drop fell. So, with that in mind, the chance of rain today is 40 percent. Temperatures will top out in the low 90s and will bottom out in the low 70s. The morning should be sunnier than the afternoon so be sure to protect exposed skin as the UV Index will be very high at 10. Otherwise, enjoy the weekend!
A little cooler
Yesterday Mauldin residents had the afternoon shower with which they've become accustomed, plus a steadier rain after sunset. Today looks like more of the same with some cooler temperatures. Highs probably will not make it into the 90s but lows should be similar to what they've been recently--the low 70s. Chance of rain is 50 percent and winds will be 5-10 mph. Once again the UV Index will be very high so make sure your skin is protected if you expect to be outdoors for an extended period of time.
Trend continues
The trend of morning sun and afternoon showers will continue today as will the typical summer temperatures. Highs will be in the low 90s and lows will be in the low 70s. Winds will be between 5-10 mph. Hopefully today's storm won't be as severe as yesterday, but perhaps it will yield s rainbow like the one spotted over town yesterday.

A duplication of yesterday
If it was 40 degrees and rainy and all the days were starting to seem the same (as far as weather) there would be cause for complaint. But, when it's sunny, in the 90s with low humidity, it's a bit hard to get upset. So this is a long way of saying that today's weather will be a carbon copy of yesterday's. There is a slightly larger chance of an afternoon shower, but nothing that should cause a change of plans. The UV Index will also be high so make sure your skin is protected if you plan on being outside for an extended period of time.
The forecast for the holiday weekend
What better way to start July and the holiday weekend with a bright sunny day? Highs will reach about 93 with lows touching the high 60s. There will be a slight chance of rain in the afternoon. Though it will be a warm summer day, some of the more vulnerable in the population should take note of the fact the Air Quality Alert has been issued and the UV Index is predicted to be severe. So, be sure to protect your skin if you'll be outdoors for an extended period of time.
