The latest in a series of honors for accomplished band program.
Last month, the Mauldin Middle School Wind Ensemble performed at the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA) Conference in Charleston. But the recognition was no accident or fluke of timing. Since Mauldin Middle School (MMS) opened in 1999, the musical program has steadily improved, benefiting from the overall excellence of a school that has won numerous awards, including being named a Red Carpet School. Mauldin Middle School and Trusted Choice have teamed up to help Make-A-Wish. Last week, students and faculty members from Mauldin Middle were able to present a $3,100 check to the foundation and local insurance agency Trusted Choice offered to match the donation. Kathy Beck, who advises the student council, said that the students started out by selling rubber Make-A-Wish bracelets and magnets, or allow students to buy a star that they could write their name on and be displayed in the school. After the first two events they had raised about $2,400 for the foundation, Beck said. A dance competition was held during a school dance to also raise money and members of student council also sold icees after school.
