Student made gang sign during mass disturbance in school's auditorium.

Lesson: When confronted by police, don't use a gang sign, not even as a joke. Police don't find it funny. A 16-year-old male student at Mauldin High School learned that lesson the hard way last week when he was suspended following a disturbance in the school's auditorium, a Mauldin Police report said. Police were dispatched to the school last Friday in reference to the disturbance, in which several students were standing and yelling at each other in the auditorium.  As one officer tried to deescalate the situation from turning into a melee, the officer observed a student yelling at a teacher. The student then was spotted using his hands to make a gang sign associated with the "Bloods" toward the crowd of students, the report said. "I then …

The Mavs clinched the win with a sixth-inning two-run blast by Ramon Osuna, who also hit two homers in the Mavs' win against Northwestern this past Saturday. “On the bus ride home Saturday we gave him the nickname Ramon the Trojan killer,” Mauldin coach Jim Maciejewski told The Greenville News. “He likes to hit against the purple and yellow, I guess.” Despite difficulties in the first two innings, Mauldin starting pitcher Daniel Johnson worked his way out of jams to claim the win. “We had …

Former Mavs' Star Making Waves at Virginia Tech

Freshman offensive tackle Jonathan McLaughlin impresses coaches, in running for starting position.

When Virginia Tech takes the field against Alabama this August to start the football season, Mauldin's Jonathan McLaughlin could be starting at offensive tackle for the Hokies. Though just a freshman (following a year of college prep at Fork Union Academy to improve his grades), the former star of Mauldin High's offensive line has been turning heads in spring practice, earning first-team reps and putting upperclassmen on notice. "He’s got toughness to him, athletic ability. He’s got size. You like his mentality," head coach Frank Beamer told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper of the 6-foot-4, 310-pound specimen. "He’s come in here and established himself pretty quickly.” With several starters now gone, competition is wide open at the Hokies' …
