MHS Stars to Continue Career Together at Erskine

Have verbally committed to Erskine

In January, Mauldin Patch wrote about a pair of pretty special basketball players for Mauldin High School. Both Morgan Alexander and Tori Whittenberg scored over 1,000 points in their illustrious careers. They both helped the Lady Mavericks girls’ basketball team to new heights this year, spending much of 2011-2012 ranked in the state’s Top 10. They also happened to be the very best of friends. They’ve played together for 13 years. But as they embarked on their college careers, there was no assurance that streak would continue. Fortunately, it will. Both girls have given a verbal commitment to continue their basketball careers at Erskine College in Due West, which is about an hour south of Mauldin. The players were recruited by other …

Mauldin's Alexander Earns All-State Accolades

One of the leaders in a 20-5 season

The Mauldin girls basketball team saw their season come to an early end on Tuesday with a 48-41 loss at Wren in the first round of the state playoffs. But the Lady Mavs' 20-5 season won't soon be forgotten, nor will the accomplshments of an outstanding senior class. One of those seniors, Morgan Alexander, picked up an individual honor on Wednesday, when she was named to the All-State team. The honor should come as no surprise as Alexander accomplished the rare double of scoring 1,000 career points and pulling down 1,000 career rebounds.

Lady Mavs Season Ends at 20-5

Could not make up an early deficit

The best Mauldin girls basketball season in recent memory came to an end on Tuesday night in Piedmont with a 48-41 loss to Wren. The Lady Mavericks fell behind 20-10 in the first quarter and clawed back to cut the lead to five, 27-22, at halftime. Mauldin was able to pull even with the Hurricanes on three different occasions, including late in the final period when a Tori Whittenberg three-point shot and a three-point play by Morgan Alexander knotted the score at 39. But Wren, the second seed in the bracket, hit its free throws in the final minutes to pull back in front. The Lady Mavs' attempt at a late rally was thwarted by the same stingy Wren zone that never allowed Mauldin to get in a shooting rhythm. Sophomore Kentra Washington led …

Lady Mavs' Whittenberg and Alexander Are Two of a Kind

The teammates do everything together, including reach the 1,000 point plateau.

The sport of basketball lends itself to dynamic duos. Magic and Kareem, Stockton and Malone, Kobe and Shaq. One outside and one inside. For as long as they can remember—literally—Mauldin High’s Morgan Alexander and Tori Whittenberg have been just such a duo. So dynamic in fact, that they both topped 1,000 career points last month. They first paired up on the softball fields at Springfield Park twelve years ago and now find themselves in the middle of what has been a magical senior year. The Lady Mavericks are ranked in the top 10 in the state with a 12-1 record heading into tonight’s match-up with regional foe Dorman, who is also ranked in the top 10. Alexander and Whittenberg have been integral in the strong start. Alexander leads the …

Girls, Boys Win Basketball Home Opener

Defeat Greenville

In two entertaining games, the Mauldin girls and boys basketball won their home openers on Friday against Greenville before a large crowd at Mauldin High School. The Lady Mavericks held off a late rally from the Lady Raiders to win 61-58 and move to 2-0 on the year. Mauldin held a 15-point lead at one juncture and appeared to be in command. But Greenville cut the lead to one late in the fourth quarter before Mauldin regained its composure. Morgan Alexander, as she was on Tuesday against Eastside, was the high scorer with 19 points. Junior Kentra Washington had 14 and sophomore Caitland Considine added 12. Tori Whittenberg had a key block down the stretch to preserve the Mauldin lead. In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Mavericks boys …
