Other races lag well behind in dollars spent and raised.
It’s safe to say that none of the five candidates pursuing the GOP nomination to represent District 8 in the State Senate are doing so for the money. But they sure are spending plenty of it. In their efforts to win votes for the District 8 seat in Tuesday's primary, Jim Lee, Joe Swann, incumbent David Thomas and Ross Turner have all spent more than the annual salary of $10,400, to which they would be entitled if they won. The fifth candidate, Chad Groover has spent nearly $8,000. According to the latest fundraising totals, which are available at the State Ethics Commission website, the candidates have collectively raised approximately $400,000 while spending approximately $325,000. Dozens braved the rain, stormy weather to hear cheer their favorite candidate.
Several dozen people gathered at the covered seats at the Greenville Drive stadium Friday night. The threat of rain and the ominous black cloud hanging above the outfield walls might have kept some people away, but not those who truly wanted to hear what a particular candidate had to say. If there had been a ballgame that night, the tarps would have covered the field. But this event wouldn't be called for rain. The podium atop the dugout was abandoned as the rains came in and the candidates joined the public under the awnings to make their pitch. While the candidates were hard to hear at times, due more so to the people enjoying themselves with friends or family members, each one had a message for voters, "Remember to vote on June 12." The…

In a fast-moving session, the candidates introduced themselves and hit on topics that are expected to shape the race over the next two months. Jimmy Tobias announces his candidacy Monday.
Local businessman Jimmy Tobias, 57, has officially filed to run for South Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District seat currently held by Trey Gowdy. Running as a Democrat, he cites extreme frustration with proposed changes in Social Security and Medicare, which Gowdy supports, as one of the main reasons for his run for office. “I do not believe it’s right to take away the security that people have worked for all their lives. I am running to stand up for the working man and their children. There are too many radical Republicans trying to take away the benefits we’ve worked so hard for because of the greed of others,” Tobias said. Additional elements of Tobias’ platform include support of the Affordable Health Care Act, reducing national …

Thanks for your info. It appears that I am in District 7, while District 8 is across the street from me, and my neighborhood was divided (even my street) and part of it is District 7 and Part of it is District 8. That explains the signs on my street. I wondered why they would put up signs on my street if I wasn't supposed to vote for them. Thanks again.   more ›
