Primary Day Candidate Profiles

A look at those candidates in races today.

Voting begins this morning at 7 a.m. For information on where to vote visit our list of precincts in Greenville County. Below is a capsule look at the candidates who have opposition in the primary. Senate District 7 - Democratic District 7 has traditionally been a Democratic district and its seat became open after its longtime occupant Ralph Anderson announced his retirement. District in the Mauldin area is comprised mostly of the town to the east of Main Street/Route 276. The winner of the Democratic primary between Lillian Brock-Flemming and Karl Allen will match up against Jane Kizer, a Republican who is running unopposed. Thanks for your info. It appears that I am in District 7, while District 8 is across the street from me, and my neighborhood was divided (even my street) and part of it is District 7 and Part of it is District 8. That explains the signs on my street. I wondered why they would put up signs on my street if I wasn't supposed to vote for them. Thanks again.   more ›

Candidates for Senate Seat 8 Meet Greenville County GOP

Fields for various local races are effectively set for June 12 primary

Now that the filing deadline has passed (last Friday at Noon) the fields for local elections are taking shape. Parties at the county level still must certify the candidates before they are official. The most hotly contested race could very well be for Senate Seat 8, which has been held by David Thomas since 1984. Thomas has four challengers in the primary and the five candidates came together yesterday for First Monday lunch hosted by the Greenville County Republican Party at the Poinsett Club in Greenville. In a fast-moving session, the candidates introduced themselves and hit on topics that are expected to shape the race over the next two months. Unemployment in this state is around 9.5%. This is a great opportunity for district 8 to send someone to Columbia who has a proven record of job creation like Joe Swann. He's dealt with the regulatory overreach and complicated tax code that continue to burden SC businesses, so he knows firsthand what needs to be fixed in order to bring industry to this area and improve our dismal jobs numbers.   more ›
