Hailee's Closed — Will Look to Move Elsewhere

Contentious relationship with the city is now over

The long-running dispute between Hailee's Sports Bar and Grill and the City of Mauldin appears to be over. Sources have told Mauldin Patch that employees of Hailee's were seen removing equipment from the location at 1178 Woodruff Road on Saturday. On Hailee's Facebook page a post on the wall says, "Hailee's has temporarily packed up and we are planning a Huge Surprise for Greenville and Upstate in General." Since being annexed in June 2010 the establishment was in a runnnig dispute with the city that led its business license being revoked and to the passage of an alcohol ordinance.

Shots Fired at Hailee's on Saturday Morning

No arrests made in latest incident

Mauldin Police are reporting that shots were fired at Hailee's Sports Bar and Grill on Saturday morning. Police say they arrived at the establishment at approximately 2:30 for an alcohol compliance check and were subsequently called back nine minutes later. When they returned there was a commotion in the parking lot and witnesses said two gun shots were fired. Police noticed a Hailee's employee had been injured trying to break up a fight inside. He sustained cuts and bruises to his face. No arrests were made. For a history of the city of Mauldin's relationship with Hailee's see the right sidebar.

City Leaders Address Hailee's Situation

Aim to silence claims of unfair treatment

Since the City of Mauldin began taking action against Hailee’s Sports Bar and Grill earlier this year, some, including Hailee’s owner Sonny Ninan, have accused the city of engaging in “selective enforcement and harassment.” During the hearing to revoke Hailee’s business license on Aug. 16th, Ninan claimed that the Mauldin Police Department is not only “picking” on his establishment, but he knew why. Ninan said that the police were engaged in retribution for the fact that they were no longer being used to work security during off-duty hours at Hailee’s. On Wednesday, city officials addressed those claims. Mauldin Police Chief Bryan Turner responded to the accusations during his testimony at the August hearing and repeated them in an …

Arrests at Hailee's Continue

Two employees charged with violating alcohol ordinance

Early this morning, the Mauldin Police Department arrested two employees at Hailee’s Sports Bar and Grill and charged them with violating the city’s alcohol ordinance. The ordinance states that no alcohol can be served after 2 a.m. One of the employees was the establishment’s manager, Elizabeth Fultz, 23, who also had been cited on Sunday morning. On Tuesday morning at about 3 a.m., Fultz and another employee, Miles Nork, 25, were arrested and remanded to the Greenville County Detention Center. Last week, Hailee’s injunction against the ordinance was denied in Circuit Court. According to Police Chief Bryan Turner his department contacted establishments in the city that would be affected by the new law now that it was about to be enforced. …

Mauldin was wanting to be paid under the table, tax free money, in which the officers and their Superiors were demanding, this issue was brought up before the city council hearing... The city council turned a deaf ear to this and now it appears that Hailee's will be taking this matter on to Circut Court, and if they dont find Justice there, I am sure they will keep taking higher. City of Mauldin Revokes Hailee's Business License

Also: Hailee's appeal of 2 a.m. ordinance is denied

The Mauldin City Council has voted to revoke the business license of Hailee’s Sports Bar and Grill at 1178 Woodruff Road. It wasn't the only bit of bad news Hailee's received, as its appeal to overturn the ordinance banning the sale of alcohol in Mauldin after 2 a.m. was denied in Circuit Court. The city council's decision comes after a lengthy and often contentious public hearing on Aug. 16, where a stream of witnesses, appearing on the City’s behalf, testified to drug use on the premises, the serving of alcohol to minors and questionable business practices. That testimony, as well as the record of the numerous calls which brought the police to the location to make arrests on crimes that were often violent in nature, was enough to …

RB, I think Patrick makes an important point below. Knowing full well that the establishment was under the scrutiny of the city for the past several months, there seems to have been little effort by the management of Hailee's to tighten security as the problems have continued recently. If one wishes to pursue life, liberty and happiness it seems fair that they ought to hold up their end of the …   more ›

POLL: Should the City of Mauldin Revoke Hailee's Business License?

Establishment has been a source of frustration for the city since being annexed

Since being annexed by the City of Mauldin last year, Hailee’s Sports Bar and Grill has been the subject of much attention from Mauldin City Police. Not much of that attention has been favorable. Yet judging from the crowds it draws on a regular basis, it is still a popular nightspot. On Monday, the Mauldin City Council held a lengthy hearing to determine whether or not to revoke Hailee’s business license. During the course of which, Sonny Ninan, the owner of Hailee’s, admitted in testimony that the restaurant is not without its flaws, but those flaws do not mean the business should be labeled a nuisance. Should the license be revoked, Ninan’s attorney Robert Childs said it would have the effect of being a “death penalty.” So, based on …

Accusations Fly at Hailee's Hearing

City council will decide business' fate after hearing stories of underage drinking, numerous police calls and other illegal activity.

Strong accusations were leveled by both sides during the course of the nearly seven-hour hearing Tuesday night at Mauldin City Hall over the city’s decision to revoke the business license of Hailee’s Sports Bar and Grill. Mauldin’s City Attorney John Duggan called numerous witnesses to make the case that the repeated calls to Hailee’s were impacting the city’s resources. Among those testifying on behalf of the city were former employees of Hailee’s, citizens who worked on underage alcohol compliance efforts, several Mauldin police officers — including Chief Bryan Turner — and city Planning and Zoning Director Peter Nomikos. The picture that was presented to council member Bob Cook, who presided over the hearing, and the rest of the city …

The city government complains about how much this business is costing the city in resources. Let me see, the police are on duty, they are getting paid for the job they do. Part of that job is to go to places and stop trouble when it is happening. How does it cost the city any more money when the police are doing what they are paid for than it costs to pay them just to ride around in their cars …   more ›

Jerome, It is standard for media outlets to reprint items from the incident reports provided by police departments. They are for the purpose of providing information to the public and do not indicate a conviction. Occasionally, an error is made on the incident report and, as in your son's case, and we have to issue a correction as we did for your son. Hope this helps. Best regards, Shawn   more ›
