$80,000 Raised For Safe Harbor

"Fashion With A Passion" doubled the original fundraising goal for the non-profit dedicated to assisting those effected by domestic violence.

Safe Harbor, a Greenville-based organization that provides services and resources for those effected by domestic violence in Greenville, Anderson, Pickens and Oconee Counties, received some $80,000 last week during a fundraiser in Greenville.  "Fashion With A Passion" was held at the Poinsett Club on March 7, and featured fashion, food and a variety of entertainment, including both live and silent auctions.  A runway show also showcased the latest Spring fashions from Monkees of the West End, Plaza Suite, Petals Boutique, Muse Shoe Studio, Wisteria Salon & Spa, Vestique, Coplons and the Safe Harbor Resale Shop.  Two former Safe Harbor clients also shared their stories of hope and success with the audience.  Former Safe Harbor client and …

Suspect Wanted in Woman's Beating

Incident that sent victim to the hospital took place during a domestic dispute.

A local man is wanted by Mauldin Police after he allegedly beat and injured a woman and assaulted her daughter during a domestic dispute, according to an incident report. The incident, which took place Feb. 12 at Brookwood Pointe Place apartments, started when the unidentified woman's daughters got into an argument over beauty supplies and accessories, the report said.  After breaking it up, the "exasperated" mother went to her room and got into a verbal altercation with the 23-year-old suspect, whose name and relationship to the woman was redacted from the report. During the spat, the suspect allegedly said he would beat the woman, which prompted her daughter to scream that he better not hit her mother, the report said. When the suspect …

Ludwig Heads To Trial For Domestic Violence

John Ludwig Jr. accused of hitting wife in 2011.

The Greenville business man, who avoided prison time after crashing his car into a home and killing a man inside, is expected to be in court next week. John Ludwig Jr. will appear this time on charges of criminal domestic violence beginning Monday.  Ludwig, a former Furman University football player, 40, was arrested in November of 2011 when he allegedly threatened and struck his wife, Shannon.  According to Greenville Police Department records, Ludwig had asked his wife to write a check for their mortgage during the argument. She told him that she would. The victim told police she then went up stairs to get ready to take a shower and the suspect came into the bathroom with her and was talking to his father on the phone. Sign Up Now for Mauldin High's 'Stampede for Harbor 2013'

5K event next Saturday will benefit domestic violence programs at Safe Harbor.

The seventh annual Mauldin High Spirit Week 5k Run/Walk will be held Saturday, January 26,, at 9 a.m. with the course beginning at Mauldin High on East Butler Road in Mauldin.  This year’s event, Stampede for Harbor, will benefit Safe Harbor, a non-profit that provides free, safe shelter and support services to victims of domestic violence and their children. The $25 entry fee for Stampede for Harbor runners and walkers includes a t-shirt and refreshments after the race provided by Whole Foods and Chick-fil-A on Woodruff Rd.  The fee is the same for “Sleep-in for Harbor," which provides individuals with the chance to support the cause and receive a t-shirt without participating in the run/walk.  Registration for the event is available …

Area Leaders Hope to Break Cycle of Domestic Violence

Lawmakers urge the community to make a difference in putting a stop to domestic violence, by helping to report incidents of domestic violence.

South Carolina is No. 2. Unfortunately, it's not a ranking for which the state or its leaders want to be recognized.The Violence Policy Center released data Sept. 19 showing that the state is ranked the second highest in the country for domestic violence homicides. Monday was a day of reflection for Upstate Congressman Trey Gowdy (R, SC-4). As Gowdy drove from Spartanburg to Greenville Monday morning, the rain and the gloominess only seemed to add to the message that he would deliver on breaking the cycle of domestic violence. SC Ranks Second in Rate of Women Murdered by Men

Report comes on the heels of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

South Carolina is a deadly place for women. So says a new report out by the Washington, D.C.-based Violence Policy Center, which has ranked the state second in the entire nation in the rate of women killed by men. The state's murder rate was 1.94 per 100,000 according to the VPC report "When Men Murder Women:  An Analysis of 2010 Homicide Data".   The annual VPC report details national and state-by-state information on female homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender.  The study uses the most recent data available from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s unpublished Supplementary Homicide Report and is released each year to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. State Ranked No. 7 in Women Killed By Men

South Carolina joins Nevada and Louisiana in Top 10 states where men murder women.

The Violence Policy Center released a report on Tuesday that ranks South Carolina as No. 7 in the nation for states with high rates of murder of women by men. This is a slight up-tick from the previous report in 2010 that listed the state as No. 8. Nevada, with a rate of 2.70 per 100,000, ranked first for the second year in a row. South Carolina is at 1.79 per 100,000.
