Property owners are urged to contact their insurance providers once the city Fire Department's improved ISO rating goes into effect June 1.
This week's news that the Mauldin Fire Department has earned a rare Class 2 ISO rating is more than just a feather in the department's cap, it should have real impacts on city property owners and business, too, city officials said. Insurance companies typically use rating classifications from the Insurance Service Office (ISO) when setting rates. Following a press conference to announce the rating upgrade, Fire Chief Russell Sapp and Mayor Dennis Raines urged all residential and commercial property owners to contact and alert their insurance companies of the upgrade when it officially goes into effect on June 1. "It's a great day in the city Mauldin anytime we can get together and make an announcement that benefits our citizens and our …

Smiles, tears of joy and a token of gratitude.
The motto of the Mauldin Miracle League is "Every child deserves a chance to play baseball." So it stands to reason that the new playground a few hundred feet away and built to accommodate children with special needs was inspired by the belief that every child deserves a chance to play. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Miracle League Director and Founder Dennis Raines, and sizable donations from the Civitan Club of Greenville, BI-LO Charities, Coca-Cola of the Upstate and GEICO, every child in Mauldin and the surrounding area does indeed have a place to play. Disagreements come on new department head, Adopt-a-Highway project and promotional video.
Monday night’s city council meeting revealed the first substantive disagreements since three new members were sworn in in January. The first item that caused division was on a promotional video for the city by a program called Insights with Terry Bradshaw. The terms of the video would enable the five-minute long piece to air on the Discovery Channel and up to 19 more times on CNN Headline News. The cost of the video is $19,800 and the city would retain ownership, allowing it to be shown at will. It would be paid for with funds from accommodations and hospitality taxes. The item passed 4-2, with council members Dale Black and Larry Goodson, who took office in January, voting against. The next item where the council parted ways was on an …

On Monday, the Mauldin Miracle League Playground received its second major donation in less than month. In a ceremony at Sunset Park at the site of the new playground, representatives from BI-LO and Coca-Cola Bottling of the Upstate presented a check for $60,000 to Miracle League Founder and Mauldin Mayor Dennis Raines. Last month, the Civitans of Greenville pledged $200,000 for the project which will result in a playground being built that will be accessible for children with special needs. Raines said he is still attempting to raise more money to pay for a roof that will keep three-fourths of the playground in the shade and protected from extreme heat. He said an additonal $20,000 would cover that cost. Maggie Painter, one of the future…

On Saturday, the Mauldin Miracle League officially opened its eighth season under brilliant sunshine and awash in the smiles of kids who waited all winter to play baseball. The atmosphere was festive as Greenville Drive mascot Reedy, as well as mascots from Sonic Drive-In and Chick fil-a were on hand in addition to the dozens of family and friends of the players. The first pitches were thrown out by Rep. Trey Gowdy and Chuck Church, owner and operator of the Woodruff Road Chick fil-a. Mauldin Mayor (and Miracle League Founder) Dennis Raines said that player registrations were nearing 100. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Leighann Bagwell, Miss Clemson 2012. Among all the festivities, the highlight might very well have been a rousing …

From Mauldin Mayor Dennis Raines: It has been a very busy three months since I was sworn in as your Mayor. I would like to personally thank former Mayor, and my friend, Don Godbey for an exceptionally smooth transition. Our first order of business in January was to rearrange our Committee structure in order to concentrate our efforts on Economic Development and getting more businesses and jobs in our City. In the near future we will have one of only two available sites in the entire Upstate that are South Carolina Department of Commerce certified. These sites are ready for a business to begin to move dirt and locate here in our City. Dunkin' Donuts should be opening in April and we have several other businesses in some form of negotiations…

Christened by local officials.
Though it has been open since Feb. 10, the new Mauldin Fire Station was made official with a ceremony that included numerous local officials on Thursday. The festivities were culminated by a ribbon cutting and luncheon. The station, whose address is 1821 Bethel Road, has been in the works since 1999, according to Mauldin Fire Chief Russell Sapp. The new facility, Mauldin's fourth fire station, sits in the shadow of I-385 and is home to six firefighters, two of whom will be on a shift at a time. Among the speakers were Mauldin City Administrator Trey Eubanks, Mayor Dennis Raines, city councill members Dale Black and Bob Cook and Greenville County Council Chairman Butch Kirven. The most poignant remarks came from Captain Phillip Brown who …

Candidates' fundraising totals
As the Republican presidential primary comes to South Carolina much will be made about fundraising and its importance in determining the winner. Fundraising is just as important in local elections, as the final campaign reports, which were posted yesterday, indicate. They can be found in more detail at the website of the South Carolina State Ethics Commission HERE. Candidates filed their final contribution and expense reports on Jan. 10. Some of the highlights: The winner of City Council Seat Six, Larry Goodson, raised $3,430.26 compared to $400 raised by the man he defeated, incumbent Michael Reynolds. Of Goodson's total funds raised, $508.56 came from his own pockets, $694.80 came from former Mauldin Mayor Wayne Crick or Crick's company …
