Trending: Are Self-Defense Classes for Women Only Sexist? Men's Rights Group Says So

Glendale, California – A free self-defense class for women has drawn criticism from a men's rights group which says the class is discriminatory.

"Just because you have a penis doesn't mean you come out of the womb with a black belt in karate," National Coalition for Men President Harry Crouch told the Glendale News-Press.

The newspaper reported that for years Glendale's Commission on the Status of Women has held the self-defense classes during April – Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Crouch believes men and boys should be allowed in the city-sponsored class as well.

"Why the City, its Commission on the Status of Women, and Shield of Defense do not want men and boys to be just as prepared as women and girls to defend themselves against sexual assault is outrageous," Crouch's letter to Glendale states.

According to the Center for Disease Control, one in five women report experiencing rape at some time in their lives, for men the figure is 1 in 71. About 5.6 percent of women and 5.3 percent of men experienced sexual violence other than rape, such as sexual coercion or unwanted sexual contact.

Do you think self-defense classes that are exclusive to women are discriminatory?
