IRS Warns of 'Taxpayer Advocate' E-Mail Phishing Scam

by Elizabeth Janney

Taxpayers should be wary of an email phishing scam aimed at collecting people's personal information, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

In the scam, people receive emails referencing the Taxpayer Advocate Service. The emails state: “Your reported 2013 income is flagged for review due to a document processing error. Your case has been forwarded to theTaxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance. To avoid delays processing your 2013 filing, contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance.”

In the email, there's a link to get contact information for the bogus "advocate" assigned to the case with an ask for personal information and a link to review reported income, the IRS warned.

People receiving such emails should not reply or click on any links.
