Madison Younginer to Open Season With Drive

The ex-Mauldin High righty is expected to be part of Greenville's starting rotation.

The 2012 Greenville Drive season will have some local flavor.

The Drive announced that Mauldin High grad Madison Younginer will be on the roster when they open the season at Fluor Field on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against Lakewood.

The right-handed Younginer, who graduated from Mauldin in 2009, spent the last two years with the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League.

Younginer suffered an injury during Spring Training last year that derailed his progress, but he is believed to be healthy to start 2012. Younginer was taken in the 7th round of the 2009 amateur draft.

He’ll be joined on the pitching staff by Matt Barnes, who was Boston’s top pick in the amateur draft last year. Catcher Blake Swihart, the Red Sox other first round pick from 2011 also made the Greenville squad.

Former Univ. of South Carolina star Jackie Bradley, Jr., who was thought to have a chance at cracking the Drive’s lineup, was assigned to Salem in the Carolina League.
