VIDEO: Langston Students Cut Hair, Raise Thousands for Cancer Research

Since opening in 2005, the haircutting, hair-shaving and hair-coloring assembly on behalf of Relay for Life has become one of the most anticipated days on Langston Charter Middle School's calendar. And for good reason. The entire school celebrates the work they've done in the previous months to raise money for cancer research via Relay for Life. They celebrate by singing, dancing, having watermelon-eating contests and most of all, by cutting their hair.

This year, the first five students to raise $100 saw their amount matched by the Langston School Board Chairman Lisa Stevens. For Ms. Stevens, the fight against cancer is not an abstraction--she's beat the disease not once, but twice. 

All told, over $8,000 was raised by the students and about 20 had their hair cut--including English teacher John English and Math teacher Elaine Steiner--by Ms. Stevens.

The hair was donated to Locks of Love, a charity that provides hair replacements for pediatric cancer patients. 

The festivities concluded with the Relay for Life at JL Mann High School.
