Rep. Trey Gowdy Rallies Faithful at Take Back 2012

Congressman has made a name for himself in only his first term.

When he was elected in 2010, Trey Gowdy (R-4) was supposed to be the low-key former prosecutor who would find a way to be quietly effective in his first term as a Congressman. It hasn’t quite worked out that way.

Before his first year was complete, Gowdy found himself in the thick of the debt ceiling debate, voting against party leadership. Undaunted, he then was made a lead investigator on a House committee on the Fast and Furious scandal. More recently he’s been looking into what went wrong in the Solyndra fiasco.

Not only has Gowdy garnered national attention, perhaps of greater significance to him is that respect he’s earned from his colleagues. That respect was in evidence at Friday’s Take Our Country Back 2012 rally in Greenville.

During his time at the podium, Sen. Jim DeMint, who previously represented South Carolina’s fourth district, said Gowdy has been the best person to ever hold the seat.

After his remarks, Gowdy spoke with Patch. He emphasized the importance of the next 7 weeks.

“If you’re a Republican in South Carolina make sure you vote. But if you know someone in Virginia or Florida or North Carolina, make sure you get them to vote, too,” Gowdy urged.

“We need to explain the constitution to people wherever we go to speak, with the understanding that different generations view it differently,” Gowdy explained. “But we need to explain that it’s not a generational document.”

Gowdy also said that he knows the poll numbers are close for many Republicans in other states, locked in a battle for the House or Senate, not to mention the uphill battle facing Mitt Romney, according to recent polls. But he’s doing what he can to move the needle in a direction he’d like.

Accordingly, Gowdy will be hitting the campaign trail to help fellow Republican House members in Texas and Wisconsin in the coming days.

Gowdy will be heavily favored to win re-election on November 6, when he face Democrat Deb Morrow.
