Rep. Gowdy Delivers Powerful Speech on VAWA

Calls on own experience.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-4) delivered a powerful statement during the debate on the Violence Against Women Act yesterday in Washington, DC.

Gowdy recounted in chilling detail the murder of Ruby Nell Lindsey by her estranged husband Marion. In September 2002, Lindsey was shot four times outside the Inman Police Department while she was calling 911. Her husband was later convicted of her murder and sentenced to death. Gowdy prosecuted the case while a solicitor for Spartanburg County.

In his remarks, Gowdy asked his colleagues to put aside election-year politics to pass the bill. Democrats claimed the bill did not offer equal protections to Native Americans, lesbian, gay, and transgender Americans and illegal immigrants. The bill passed 222-205 largely along partisan lines and goes to the White House, where it is expected to be vetoed.
