Property To Be Voted On For Annexation At Tonight's City Council Meeting

Alcohol ordinance will get a second reading

A property on Old Stage Road will be voted on for annexation at tonight’s Mauldin City Council meeting. It will be the first reading for the proposal to annex, two of which are needed to confirm the annexation.

The other highlight of tonight’s agenda is a second reading of an . If passed, the measure would immediately prohibit the sale of alcohol after 2 a.m. Though it did not specifically identify any businesses, the ordinance was put before the council largely because of ongoing concerns about Hailee’s, an after hours establishment located off Woodruff Road. An incident in the spring in the Hailee’s parking lot led to attempted murder charges being filed. Violation of the ordinance will result in a $500 fine.

The annexation vote is part of the city’s ongoing effort to become more attractive to economic development. According to City Administrator Trey Eubanks, the property, which is approximately 40 acres, is zoned industrial.

“We would love for someone to come in and develop the land,” Eubanks said.

The property is bordered on three sides by Mauldin city and is also adjacent to the Trinity Commerce Center (see photos). The land is currently occupied, in part, by an auto shop. In addition to its proximity to other businesses and its zoning, Eubanks also pointed out how close the site is to major rail and Interstates 385 and 85, the latter of which offers quick access to Greenville-Spartanburg Airport. Eubanks said the Greenville Area Development Corporation and the state Department of Commerce will help market the site.

With annexation, the city acquires a property which was previously not receiving services. If approved after a second reading, the annexed property then receives those services, which include fire and police. The annexation comes at no cost to the city.
