Morrow Picks Up Cross-Party Endorsement

Gowdy's Democratic challenger for Congress gets the nod from the S.C. Working Families Party.

Democrat Deb Morrow, who faces an uphill battle to unseat District 4 Congressman Trey Gowdy in November, will get at least an extra boost today.

At an afternoon press conference this afternoon in Spartanburg, Morrow will pick up the cross endorsement of the S.C. Working Families Party. Though a minor political party, it's a state-certified one, formed in 2006. With the endorsement, which essentially acts as a party nomination, Morrow will appear twice on the ballot.

That might not necessarily translate into more votes, but it will serve as extra exposure on the ballot and win her the support of the party's grassroots activist base, party officials said.

Votes cast for Morrow on the Working Families ballot line count toward the candidates total, and also, Working Families Party members said, send a message to all the candidates to focus on the needs of hard working South Carolina families.

According to a release, "South Carolina Working Families Party is a new, independent party that fights for hard working South Carolina families. The party focuses on the issues that matter to every day working-class and middle-class South Carolinians, like creating good jobs, quality public schools, making healthcare more affordable and fair taxes. WFP members evaluate all the candidates – Democrats and Republicans – and only support those who are committed to standing with hard working families."

The endorsement will take place at 3:30 p.m. today at the Spartanburg County Public Library at 151 South Church St.
