Mauldin Middle Teacher Charged After Allegedly Striking a Student

Susan Worthington has been charged by Mauldin City Police with assault and battery, third degree.

A Mauldin Middle School teacher is on administrative leave and faces disciplinary action, after being charged with allegedly striking a student.

Greenville County Schools Spokesperson Oby Lyles said the district was informed Wednesday that Susan Worthington, a sixth-grade language arts teacher at Mauldin Middle School, was charged by Mauldin City Police with assault and battery, third degree.

Lyles said Worthington, who began teaching at the school in August, was placed on leave March 8, after she was accused by a student of striking him that day.

Lyles said the school administration immediately began its investigation of the matter, which continues, and contacted the Mauldin City Police.

Worthington is being held on a $1,088 cash or surety bond at the Greenville County Detention Center.

Prior to joining the staff at Mauldin Middle, Worthington worked four years at Woodmont Middle School, according to the district. She also served in the district at Beck Middle, Stone Academy, Sue Cleveland Elementary and Tanglewood Middle.
