UPDATE: Simpsonville Crash Fatality Identified

Crash happened late Thursday night on NE Main Street.

Update: The Greenville County Coroner's Office has identified the victim of a fatal collision Thursday night in Simpsonville as Walter Werner, 69, of Startex. 

Capt. Kevin Threlkeld of the Simpsonville Police Department said Friday that Werner was entering traffic from the Subway restaurant on NE Main Street when he was struck by a Ford pickup truck. 

Werner, who was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial, was not wearing his seatbelt when his truck was hit on the driver's side door, the coroner's office said.

Original story: A two-vehicle crash near downtown Simpsonville killed a man late Thursday night, the Greenville County Coroner's Office reported.

The man has not yet been identified.

The wreck occurred around 11 p.m. at 895 NE Main Street, according to the coroner's office. 

The victim, said to be in his late 60s or early 70s, was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he later died in the emergency room, the coroner's office said.
