Langston Charter Middle School seventh and eighth graders, along with the Sweet Frog Mascots, Scoop and Cookie, welcome new 6th grade students to Langston and help them find their homeroom classes during the school’s New Student Orientation Night. New friends, Monica Avila and Emma Chacknes, fill out interesting information about themselves as part of a getting to know you game at the Langston Charter Middle School Sixth Grade Girls Meet and Greet Luau sponsored by the school and coordinated by parents to help new students transition to middle school and get to know each other before the first day of school. The girls enjoyed an ice cream bar, decorated flip flops, and played games.

Langston Charter Middle School eighth grader, Anish Chaluvadi, shows off the awards he received  for being the SC merit winner for the 2012 Discovery & 3M Young Scientist Challenge and the SC state winner of Doodle 4 Google, a contest where students are invited to use their artistic talents to redesign Google’s homepage logo.

SC Merit Winner for the 2012 Discovery & 3M Young Scientist Challenge – Langston Charter Middle School eighth grader, Anish Chaluvadi (pictured above), is the SC state merit winner for the 2012 Discovery & 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Anish’s entry “Portable Ethanol Generator” was selected for its ability to use common household refuse to create ethanol for use as fuel. 

SC State Winner of Doodle 4 Google - Out of more than 114,000 submissions, Langston Charter Middle School eighth grader, Anish Chaluvadi is one of 50 US finalists and the SC state winner of Doodle 4 Google, a contest where students redesign Google’s homepage logo. Chaluvadi’s winning art was on display at Gibbs Museum of Art in Charleston during the month of July. The art can be viewed here. 

New Teachers — Langston has added three new teachers to its staff. English teacher Michael Townes, Science teacher Michael Shade, and Math teacher David Case (pictured above).

Langston Library – The current library fundraiser has reached 90 percent of its goal and will end October 10. Proceeds will be used to stock the new library with needed books. Go to www.funds4books.com and type in the Langston school code - “4fdf” to make donations. Please contact Deann McKinley, Langston Library Coordinator, at rndmckinley@bellsouth.net with any questions.

Open House – Parents of current Langston students are invited to the school on Thursday, September 20, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  Parents will meet their child’s teachers and learn teachers’ expectations for the school year.

Langston Charter Middle School Enrollment Lottery for 2013-14 — Prospective parents must attend one of the three Application Orientation Meetings, as part of the lottery application process: Thursday, September 27 at 7 p.m., Saturday, October 13 at 4 p.m., or Tuesday, October 30 at 7 p.m. and submit an application before the deadline of 5 p.m., Thursday, November 1, 2012. A lottery of all complete applications will be on November 8. Parents of former or current students with a sibling planning to enroll for next year must complete the application process before the deadline of November 1. The application will be posted on the website – www.langstoncharter.org. Call Celanie Martin, Registrar, at 286-9700, with questions.

Internet Safety Meeting – Rick Floyd, Greenville County Schools Information Security Representative, will be at Langston on October 4 to speak to the students in their leadership classes. A parent meeting will held October 4 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the school to teach parents what they can do to protect their child from dangers on the internet.

Langston Collections - Langston collects Boxtops for Education, pop tops from aluminum cans for the Ronald McDonald House, batteries for recycling, and used printer cartridges and cell phones to recycle and earn money for the Science department. Please bring items to be donated in to the front office.

Langston Fundraising —  Langston participates in Bi-Lo Boosterplus, Publix Partners, and Target Take Charge of Education programs to earn money for the school from everyday purchases. Forms and information about how to sign up are available at the front office or you may call 864-286-9700 for more information.
