Rep. Trey Gowdy Awarded by Club for Growth

Among 45 congressmen and senators to receive the honor

Congressman Trey Gowdy, who serves much of the Upstate in the U.S. House of Representatives, has been recognized by the conservative group Club for Growth as a Defender of Economic Freedom.

Gowdy (R-4) scored a 97 (out of possible 100) to join the 34 Congressman and 11 Senators who were also awarded. Sen. Jim DeMint scored a 100 and fellow South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney  (R-5) scored a 99. South Carolina Congressmen Joe Wilson (R-2) and Jeff Duncan (R-3) also had scores of 97.

In a statement Gowdy said, “It is important elected officials remember to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ money and create an environment that is conducive to job growth.  As a recipient of the Defender of Economic Freedom Award, I am humbled to be in such great company.  We must get our fiscal house in order if we are to reestablish America’s economic prowess.”

• Replacing the current tax code

• School choice

• Regulatory reform and deregulation

• Reform entitlements to increase economic freedom and ensure that long-term federal spending is financially sustainable

• Social Security reform with personal retirement accounts
