You may have heard. The Super Bowl is this weekend. While it's admittedly a stretch to find a Mauldin connection to the big game, Patch did check in with Doug Shaw, head football coach at Mauldin High, to get his thoughts--and a prediction.
Coach Shaw said he follows college football more closely than he does the pros. But he did say he'll be pulling for the Giants.
"I grew up a Dolphins fan so I don’t like the Patriots," Shaw said. "But (quarterback Tom) Brady and (head coach Bill) Belichick are as good as anybody."
That being said, Coach Shaw picked the Giants in a close one, 28-21.

Ok, here's my pick...normally I don't put much stock in emotion when you get to high stakes games like the Super Bowl. But I think the Pats still have a bad taste in their mouth from four years ago when the Giants upset them and ruined their perfect season. Both teams will be prepared and ready, but I think the Pats will have that little bit extra of focus than can make the difference.
Much has been made about the Giants wide receivers and the Pats secondary. But I think the Pats will be able to get just enough pressure on Eli Manning to disrupt New York's passing game. On the other side of the ball, I think the Pats will do everything possible to keep Tom Brady protected. A late Brady TD pass to Gonzalez wins it, 30-26.
