Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Patch Contest: Appreciate Your Teacher

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we're giving away a free $50 gift card to a local teacher and a $25 card to the reader who appreciates them.

It can be a thankless job, teaching.

You're settling drama-filled arguments about who sits next to whom.

You're sorting out who's telling the truth when someone starts crying and everyone's pointing fingers.

And you're always taking work home with you, whether it's papers to grade or kids you're worrying about.

While homeroom moms and parents are working this week to honor teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, Patch thought it would give a shout-out as well.

We'd like to award an Upstate teacher with a $50 gift card to thank them for everything they do. And we're looking for your help.

Just post a comment below to tell us the name and the school of the teacher you'd like to recognize. Tell us why you've chosen them. And next Monday, we'll randomly select one to win a $50 gift card.

And if your comment is selected, we'll give you a $25 gift card as well.

Just nominate one teacher per comment, but you can post as many different comments (with other teachers) as you'd like. And encourage others to do the same, since the more commenters your favorite teacher gets, the better their chance of winning.

Here are the obligatory rules:

  • Open to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter, leave a comment on this story telling us who you think is the best teacher in Greenville County, Pickens County and Anderson District 1 schools, where they teach and why you chose them.
  • All entries must be received by noon Eastern Time, May 14, 2012.
  • You may enter one comment per user for each teacher you're nominating. You may enter multiple comments for multiple teachers.
  • Two winners will be selected in one random drawing.
  • One (1) Grand Prize Winner will receive a $50 Visa gift card for being the Upstate's best teacher. Approximate Retail Value: $50. One (1) reader will receive a $25 Visa gift card for nominating the teacher. Approximate Retail Value: $25.
  • Click here for complete Official Rules.

I would also like to nominate Kathleen Smith of Hunt Meadows. We have had the pleasure of having her for both of our girls for first grade. She has gone through some tough times, but never lets it get in the way of her teaching. She has instilled a love of reading within both my children that will last a lifetime. We have gained not only a teacher, but a friend in Kathleen as she truly care about each and every child and makes the parents feel as if she is a part of the family.

I would like to nominate Amy Godfrey of Hunt Meadows. She is my daughter's third grade teacher. My girl comes home from school so excited about what she has learned each day. We moved from MA 5 years ago, so I get to learn about SC history right along with her. She is so excited about everything they are learning that we are planning trips around the state this summer to see what she has learned about. She even stayed up late one night reading about the HL Hunely submarine from the civil war and we are making plans to go see it. She is wild about science and Mrs. Godfrey cultivates that excitement within them.

My Granddaughter is HIGHLY allergic to Hand Santizer and Anti Bacterial Soap, and Mrs Hudson has got to great lengths to make sure Hayley is not around it or exposed to any of it. She also makes learning for these children so fun for them. My granddaughter comes home everyday having learned something new. She has so much patience with these 5 & 6 year olds!!!!! She make sure she stays in contact with each and every parent. And is always available to meet with a parent, and she does it on the parents schedule not on her schedule.

One of the things I really like about Mrs. Taylor is that she stays in contact with us regarding how our child is doing...when things are going well and when things are not going as well as we might hope. Hopefully, the 3rd time I try to submit this will be the charm. I wanted to recognize Kay Hiott at Easley High School. I was in her 9th grade Honors English class back when she taught at Easley Junior High School. I vividly remember acting out scenes from Romeo and Juliet and studying some of the all time great novels such as The Outsiders and To Kill a Mockingbird. My daughter was placed into her 9th grade Honors English class this year. Two generations of our family have had the privilege of learning from Mrs. Hiott. I have been pleased that she has not lost her passion for teaching. I believe it has grown. It takes someone special to reach teenagers in the way that Mrs. Hiott can.

My daughter, Lydia, and I would like to nominate her wonderful teacher, Toshia Leisten, at East End Elementary. Lydia adores her and she jumps out of bed every morning ready to go to school. Mrs. Leisten has so much energy ~ she teaches using songs, chants, and cheers! She does a wonderful job of making every single student feel important. It takes a special person to keep it fresh day in and day out. Lydia says, "Mrs. Leisten is #1!"

My son, Benjamin, and I would like to recognize and nominate his wonderful teacher, Amy McJunkin, at East End Elementary. Mrs. McJunkin works wonders with her very large class of fourth graders. Benjamin has especially enjoyed science and social studies with her. I think she really understands how boys are put together and how they work. Benjamin has been so fortunate to have her this year and I think he is WELL prepared for 5th grade and beyond. Thank you, Mrs. McJunkin!!
