MHS Phenom Shines on the Baseball Diamond

Mauldin High pitcher/shortstop Cory Thompson has a Major League arm and a bright future ahead.

When the school year ends, Mauldin High's Cory Thompson could have a big decision to make.

Attend the University of South Carolina on a baseball scholarship — or turn pro?

Thompson's that good.

Unlike the vast majority of pitchers his age, the Mauldin senior has a 94 mph fastball — that's Major League speed. Combine that with his curveball, and a changeup he's been working on, not to mention ability at the plate to launch one out of the park, Thompson appears poised to be taken in the MLB draft this year, WSPA reports.

In addition to his prowess on the mound, Thompson can also play shortstop, and he's batting around .424 with a handful of home runs. One the mound, he has amassed an impressive .120 ERA with 32 strikeouts."

"It's been pretty impressive the amount of [pro scouts] who have showed up from day one," Mauldin baseball coach Jim Machiejewski told the station. "It's been somewhat overwhelming. It's just a testament to the talent he has."
