Mauldin Wins Weather-Shortened Jamboree 14-7

Lightning once again plays havoc with Mavs' plans

Mother Nature has not been kind to the Mauldin High football team this preseason. Last week they never made it onto the field at the Jamboree at Greenville High. And in the Chick fil-a Jamboree on Friday, their portion of the five-game event was shortened to just about one quarter. A lightning delay during the first game pushed the start time for Mauldin to 10:35 p.m. When the game was called with four seconds on the clock in the first quarter Mauldin led Wren, 14-7.

In the quarter that the Mavericks were on the field, the offense continued to excel. Dre Massey ran in a touchdown from inside the five after the defense recovered a fumble. Mauldin’s other score came on an electrifying run and catch by Jordan Hallums. Hallums caught a short pass, evaded the first tackler and then outran the rest of the defense for the remaining 60 yards.

Coach Doug Shaw was hoping to get some of his injured players on the field this week in advance of next week’s season opener against rival Hillcrest. They will have to get ready in practice this week.

Athletic Director Steve Frady said the field at Mauldin High will be ready in time for the Hillcrest game. The field was not in good enough shape to host Friday’s Jamboree as had been planned. When it was deemed unplayable the event was moved to Hillcrest.
