Massey and Lomax Lead Mauldin to Win Over Hanna, 49-31

Offense all but unstoppable as they score seven touchdowns

Dre Massey and Reggie Lomax made sure there would be no T.L. Hanna comeback this time. Massey passed for three scores and ran for two more while the speedy Lomax exploded for three touchdowns—all of 50 yards plus—to key Mauldin’s 49-31 victory on Friday night. The win moved Mauldin to 3-0 and gave the Mavericks revenge for a heartbreaking loss last year to the Yellow Jackets.

Massey and Lomax were the stars of an attack which was virtually unstoppable. That, coupled with a defensive scheme that adjusted at halftime, stymied any hopes of a Hanna comeback.

That being said, the key play of the night might have been a tackle by a wide receiver. With Mauldin driving just before halftime and holding a 28-19 lead, a Massey pass was picked off by Hanna in the end zone and run back. But Jordan Hallums chased the Hanna player down—all 91 yards—just before he could score and swing the momentum in the Yellow Jackets’ favor.

“I was worried,” Mauldin Coach Doug Shaw said of the play. “The coaches were telling me in the headset that Jordan would run him down, but I wasn’t sure. But he did. That was an amazing play from him.”

Despite the interception, Mauldin kept turnovers to a minimum and were in command throughout the second half. Shaw said it was the most complete game the Mavericks have played this season.

The defense made some adjustments at halftime to show Hanna a different front, but they were also helped by the return of lineman C.J. Young. “Having C.J. back was a big key,” Shaw said. “He had a big sack and was a real leader out there for us.”

Massey’s three touchdown passes came to A.J. Brown (twice) and to Lomax. Roy Nash had the other score.

Mauldin returns home next week to host Westside on Friday. They will try to go 4-0 with kickoff at 7:30.
